Why Kirsten Kjaer Weis Started Her Makeup Brand- And Why It's So Good
For anyone who's first delve into clean beauty is Kjaer Weis, it can be startling to see some of the high prices, and when products are so expensive we tend to ask ourselves- Is it really that good?
And we've got the answer for you: Yes. Yes they are.
Back when Weis started as a luxury makeup artist, she found that most of the models were having trouble with the makeup applied on them daily. "I’d constantly have models sit in my chair and pinpoint stuff in my kit that they couldn’t use—a certain foundation or blush because they reacted badly to it." This didn't sit right with Weis, who had a rural upbringing on a farm in Denmark. She wished she could use more organic, natural beauty products on her models to save them from the irritants in traditional makeup, but at the time, there wasn't anything on the market. "I never used natural products because they didn’t perform. There was a massive gap in the market for a green brand that could truly perform and was luxurious."
This natural progression led to Weis founding what we know today as Kjaer Weis. The beautiful products in the line are not only great for your skin and well being, but good for the environment as well. "The dream was to have true luxury packaging that was also sustainable. It seemed like the two were always separate, green and luxury, and I wanted to prove that you could leave out all compromises and have it all in one. It proved challenging to have it also be sustainable and that’s how it turned into a refill system."
Kjaer Weis products are always formulated without parabens, phthalates, and silicones, without sacrificing creamy and smooth application. "The first thing we avoided when creating our products was parabens. They are a dormant thing that sits in everything, and a lot of artificial fragrances are really irritating as well. They are easily taken out of the mix. I’m not a big fan of silicons either, they create an artificial layer that sits on everything and clogs up pores. Producing without silicons is time-consuming, but it’s possible. And then phthalates, which are in a lot of nail polishes. Those are the top things I would recommend avoiding, because they’re easy to recognize."
Although they may have a hefty price tag, Kjaer Weis products are great for you, and the environment -each refill is 50% to 75% of the price of the brand new products with packaging, plus you can switch up colors if you don't like a blush, bronzer, or highlighter the first tie around and keep the original packaging.
Weis recommends starting with the little things when it comes to switching to organic and clean makeup, but there are some items that are more important to others.
"Just start step by step, because it’s a big change. Start with something you eat, like lipstick, then foundation and mascara. In terms of skin care, definitely go all-natural for deodorant, because it goes straight into your lymph system."
