BIPOC Owned Hair Care Brands for Natural Curls

SheaMoisture

Probably one of the best known natural hair care brands out there, SheaMoisture is a great option as they not only have dozens of products, but they come at affordable prices and are available at many drugstores and supermarkets. Some of their cult products include the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, a curl cream that’s super hydrating with curl supporting ingredients, and the Manuka Honey shampoo, a hydrating co-wash.

Eden Body Works

Founded in 2004 by Jasmine Lawrence, Eden Body Works was founded when Lawrence noticed a lack of naturally clean ingredients in natural hair care products. Her first batch of products were cooked up in her own kitchen, and that sentiment is carried through to today where all of their products are cruelty, sulfate, silicone, and paraben free. With 165 four and a half star reviews, their Coconut Shea Curl Defining Creme is a Best of the Best award winner from NaturallyCurly. Their Papaya Castor Scalp Cleanser also won Allure’s Best in Beauty award this year, and is currently on sale for $5.

Camille Rose

Another kitchen-started brand, Camille Rose is founded on the idea that you should be able to eat the products you put on your body. Created with kitchen-grade ingredients, Camille Rose is a mid-range price for top tier ingredients, and is available most notably at Target. Their most popular product is the Curl Maker, a defining jelly made with Marshmallow and Agave Leaf extract, and has 147 five star reviews on their website.

Uncle Funky’s Daughter

Focused on sustainable, junk-free hair products, UFD is free of mineral oils, parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic dyes. They use renewable plant resources such as olive, coconut and aloe as the base of their products and build upon those with other natural products that nurture and define curls and coils. Their website features an awesome quiz feature, allowing you to put in your curl type, what you want out of your curls and what you want out of your product and it shows you their products that will work for you.

Briogeo

This brand has been taking the haircare industry by storm this year, and it’s a huge bonus that it’s made from clean ingredients. Briogeo was created by Nancy Twine after she moved to New York City and found that the natural haircare on the market was lacking when compared to her grandmother’s recipes from back home. So Nancy decided to bring those recipes to New York City, and create them with 6-free ingredients that are 90 to 100 percent natural. Their “Be Gentle, Be Kind” line has quickly risen in popularity among people of all hair types, but especially those with sensitive scalps or hair that easily becomes damaged. They’ve won more Allure Best in Beauty awards than we can count, and we highly recommend them if you’re looking for nourishing, healthy haircare.

Vernon Francois

A champion for natural texture, Vernon Francois founded his haircare line to create a professional, yet affordable, line of hair products that celebrated and worked with natural textures of all kinds. The best part about his brand is their effort to leave the planet better than they found it by using ingredients you can track and partnering with farms in Africa to ensure that everything is being traded fairly. Their products are also created without dyes, parabens, sulfates, gluten, phthalates, DEA and are cruelty free as well.
